| The Story of Jack the Ripper | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| The deeds of Jack the Ripper have become the greatest unsolved and intriguing series of bloody atrocities in criminal history. The case is still trying to be solved by researchers by the very few clues Jack left behind. There are many guesses in who Jack really is. Was he a Jewish ritual slaughterman? Was he a surgeon who became crazy? Was he a mortician? Was he a policeman with the perfect alibi? Was he really a she with a grudge? Or was he a deranged member of the British Royal Family? It is still uncertain and we will probably never find out who he was. Jacks reign of terror lasted only three months. The first victim of Jack was on August 31, 1888. He killed Mary Ann Nichols, a 42-year-old prostitute. Jack grabbed her by the throat and dragged her into an alley. He slit her throat from ear to ear. A police surgeon said, "Only a madman could have done this. I have never seen so horrible a case. She was ripped about in the manner only a person skilled in the use of a knife could have achieved." On September 8, another ripper victim was found. 'Dark Annie' Chapman, another prostitute, whose entrails were laying beside her as the killer moved in a sexual frenzy. The Fleet Street News Agency then recieved a letter. It said, "Dear Boss. I keep on hearing that the police have caught me. But they won't fix me yet. I am down on certain types of women and I won't stop ripping them until I get buckled. Grand job that last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. I love my work and I want to start again. You will soon hear from me with my funny little game. I saved some of the proper stuff in a little ginger beer bottle after my last job to write but it went thick like glue and I can't use it. Red ink is fit enough, I hope. Ha, ha. Next time I shall clip the ears off and sent them to the police, just for jolly." On September 30, a third victim was found. It was 44-year-old Elizabeth Stride. Police believed Jack was disturbed during this killing because only her throat was cut. The rest of her body was untouched. The fourth victim was Catherine Eddowes. She was found on the same day as Stride. She was disembowelled and her intestines were drapped across her right shoulder. Her face was hacked off and her ears were missing. Written on a nearby wall in chalk it said: The Jewes (sic) are not men to be blamed for nothing. The final victim was Mary Kelly, a 25-year-old prostitute. She was found on December 9. She was found in her apartment where Jack spent hours ripping her. The landlord of the building was the one that found her and told the police, "I shall be haunted by this sight for the rest of my life." Police got a description of a man seen with Kelly. He was tall, dark, and wore a moustache and a deerstalker hat. Then just as fast as the killings started, they stopped. Everyone forgot about the ripper until the case's popularity grew for modern criminoligists. The ripper has been in books, movies, and TV shows. There are tours of his killing grounds in England and then you can have a beer at a bar named after him. There are many ripper suspects. One is John Druitt, an impoverished barrister, trained in medical skills at a young age. He was found death shortly after the killing of Mary Kelly. Another is Prince Eddy, Queen Victoria's son, who was believed to have gone mad after catching a venereal disease. Another is Robert D'Onston Stevenson, a man obsessed with witchcraft and had knowledge of crude field surgery.
